LAKE MEAD (NEVADA, ARIZONA)

Lake Mead was named after Elwood Mead, who was the commissioner of the United States Bureau of Reclamation from 1924 to 1936 during the planning and construction of the Boulder Canyon Project that created the Hoover Dam, and lake. Lake Mead was established as the Boulder Dam Recreation Area in 1936, administrated by the National Park Service.  It was then changed to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area in 1964, this time including Lake Mohave, and the Shivwits Plateau under its jurisdiction. Both lakes and the surrounding area offer year-round recreation options including jet ski rentals, stand up paddleboarding, and boat rentals. The accumulated water from Hoover Dam forced the evacuation of several communities, most notably St. Thomas, Nevada, whose last resident left the town in 1938.  The ruins of St. Thomas are sometimes visible when the water level in Lake Mead drops below normal.

Modern Lake Lahontan is a reservoir on the Carson river in northwest Nevada in the United States.  Lake Lahontan is formed by the Lahontan dam and is located between Fallon, Nevada and Carson City, Nevada.  The flows from the Carson River are augmented by diversions.  Lahontan reservoir is very large when full and its primary activities for recreation are boating, jet ski rentals, lake tours, wakeboarding, and waverunner rentals.

As it is contaminated with mercury from the corn stock and other mines, consumption of fish from the lake should be limited as per posted guidelines. Much of the shoreline is sandy and makes for good camping, and jet ski rentals.  The Carson River enters the lake at its southwestern end. The lake is very shallow there, and the shoreline can vary drastically as the lake empties and fills. The Trunkee Canal enters at the northeastern end, immediately adjacent to the dam.
